MELAKA CASHLESS
The Cashless Melaka Programme (Phase 1), which began in 2023, was a collaborative effort between the Melaka State Government, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Financial Service Providers (FSPs) such as Maybank, Touch ‘n Go, Boost, and Foodpanda. The programme has undergone a series of promotion and awareness campaigns at various locations in Melaka, including Cashless Pilot at Pasar Taman Seri Duyong, Cashless Month at Bazaar Ramadhan dan Aidilfitri and Cashless Carnival at SMIX 2023 at MITC, with the aim of fostering a “Digital First Society” by raising public awareness of cashless payments as a convenient, secure and fast option.
The phase 1 Cashless Melaka programme focused on wholesale and retail sector, empowering small traders and retailers by enabling hybrid sales through digital channels, thus expanding their market reach, increasing income opportunities, and ensuring business continuity during unexpected events such as floods or the COVID-19 pandemic.
Local traders was encouraged to register their businesses with financial service providers on digital platforms and benefit from special incentives and exclusive offers provided by these providers (depending on their respective offers). Meanwhile, the local community can make cashless purchases. The Cashless Melaka Programme (Phase 1) has recorded 13,000 new cashless users, and 2,300 traders have been onboarded onto Financial Service Providers’ (FSPs) digital platforms.
In addition to the promotion and awareness campaigns, a policy encouraging businesses to offer cashless payment options was introduced in the “Melaka Mesra Peniaga” 2023 guidelines by the Unit Kerajaan Tempatan (UKT), Melaka, to ensure the sustainable adoption of cashless payments.
